6 Figures Without A Team? She Did It!

Talking shrimp– her solo owned email and result oriented copywriting agency is one of the most successful content marketing firms out there– and she operates it single-handedly without a full time employee setting.

Talking Shrimp  provides entertaining, original copy and branding ideas for TV networks, websites, products, small businesses, and service based entrepreneurs and works with big name brands in the industry.

A Million Dollars At 50?

Laura started out as a copywriting intern in 1992.

Initially her entire business was based on one-to-one copywriting services.

She helped clients in real time in a shared Google Doc.

As she polished her skills and loaded on experience, she was invited to write spots for big head brands like Bravo, Nickelodeon, NBC, HBO, Fandango and many more!

She recalls her hourly price went up to $1450.

She is also Marie Forleo‘s partner in The Copy Cure and collaborator on Marie TV.

Most of Laura’s revenue comes from selling digital courses and products through emails.

Her copywriting Mini Course retails for $49 for the 10 minutes of consultation!

That’s an hourly rate of about 300$!

No Employees, Only Contractors?

In Laura’s words-

I didn’t want to interview, manage, have meetings with, or feel responsible for the livelihoods of a bunch of people. In the event that earnings went down, I didn’t want to have to panic about making payroll.’

Instead of employees she hires contractors.

An independent contractor is not an employee. They’re specialists. They come in already knowing how to do the task at hand, which saves a lot of time with trying to train them. Moreover contractors also often have multiple clients; what you pay them does not determine their entire livelihood.

These are her favorites in the game!

1. A Designer/Developer/Digital Strategist:

Laura’s venture was heavily moderated by Michelle Martello, founder of Minima Designs.

According to her, Michelle is a boss at graphic design, web coding, and getting both seen and paid online.

2.An Online Business Manager (OBM)

Her OBM, Sandra Booker, has her own company, Any Old Task.

Sandra assisted with newsletter emails, by checking them for typos and other minor grammatical errors. The “Check ‘n’ Send” system.

Tasks that were time consuming and not in her ‘zone of genius’ went to Sandra and her team who she manages.

This freed her up to pivot from one-on-one services to the business model she now endorses which is based on scalable offerings.

The Shrimp’s Advice For Budding Freelancers-

The Shrimp quotes-

‘Hire at least one contractor to free up time and bandwidth. It’ll let you focus on what you do best. Don’t try to do everything yourself, or you’ll never be able to do more or generate more revenue than you already do.’

Clearly an expert in the game!
